Karate Classes in Ellijay, Georgia

Ages 6 and up, taught by the same instructor who opened this studio in 1972.

Parents usually come to United Karate Studio in Ellijay looking for real solutions - whether their child is struggling with focus, fighting low confidence, dealing with school bullies, or spending too much time glued to screens. Since 1972, Grandmaster Ben Kiker’s proven martial arts program has given local kids the structure they need. Through traditional karate training, students learn respect, self-control, physical fitness, and the mental toughness required to push past challenges. The balance and strength they gain on the mat are great, but the true goal is life skills: discipline that shows up at home, better focus in the classroom, and confidence that lasts a lifetime.

Backed by a 50-year legacy - including four World Champion titles and six “Most Supportive School” awards at the All Star Nationals - our youth karate program offers world-class instruction in a positive, supportive environment. Whether your child is looking for top-tier martial arts competition or simply needs a high-energy outlet that builds character, our Ellijay karate classes give them the foundation to succeed.

Karate does both, out of the same hour.

Inside the room

What actually happens in class

Every session begins with purposeful conditioning - push-ups, dynamic stretching, and agility footwork to get the body ready. From there, students move into technical training, drilling blocks, strikes, kicks, and traditional forms at precise speeds. Partner work is always strictly matched by size and belt level, ensuring every student stays challenged and safe.

For beginners, the first few weeks are about mastering the environment - learning the etiquette, structure, and expectations of the floor before tackling complex techniques. We do this intentionally, because establishing habits of respect and focus first is what makes the training stick for life. Every class ends just as it began: lined up, focused, and bowed out.

Why it's worth the hour

Real health - in the body and in the mind

These are the real reasons most families stay with United Karate Studios for years.

The body

Strength, balance, agility, and cardiovascular endurance built hour by hour. Martial arts isn’t a seasonal sport that ends in November — it delivers year-round physical conditioning that stays with them for life.

The mind

Training requires students to stand still, actively listen, and repeat a movement until it’s mastered. That focus is a trainable muscle. The self-control practiced on the mat carries right over to homework at the kitchen table and attention in the classroom.

Discipline from the inside

Real motivation has to come from within. Our belt ranking system gives kids concrete goals to strive for and a clear path to earn them through honest effort. When a child proves to themselves that hard work earns progress, they carry that confidence into every new challenge.

Ages and placement

Placed by age and experience

Students start at six

We deliberately do not offer a preschool program. Our classes require a baseline level of focus and attention that most children reach around age six. Starting too early often leads to frustration and burnt-out kids. If your child is four or five, waiting a year sets them up to progress much faster and enjoy the journey far more.

Not by age alone

Following our two-week introductory course, students are grouped by both age and experience level. A ten-year-old beginner and a ten-year-old advanced belt have completely different training needs; pairing them together holds both back. We match students thoughtfully so every child stays appropriately challenged, safe, and motivated.

Who does the placingBen Kiker decides where every student goes after the two-week course. He has been making that call for fifty years.

Our dojo spans generations — from youth working through the belt system and teenagers building confidence, to parents training alongside their kids and adults who came for the fitness and stayed for the community.

You don’t need to be in peak shape to get started. Training scales to your current fitness level, teaching proper technique at a pace and intensity suited to your body. If you’re wondering whether you’re too old — or out of shape — the proof is right on our mat twice a week.

After school in Ellijay

An after-school activity that runs all year

Most youth programs in Gilmer County come and go with the season — school sports wrap up, rec leagues end, and apple orchards are strictly for the fall.

United Karate Studio offers consistent, year-round training just two minutes from downtown Ellijay. Our indoor facility keeps kids active through every season, providing a structured environment where they never have to sit on the bench. Whether your child thrives in an individual, self-paced sport or simply needs a positive energy outlet on a rainy weekday, our program delivers continuous growth all year long.

Evening classes available. Call (706) 635-6800 for current schedule and enrollment details.

About boxing and kickboxing

Grandmaster Ben Kiker’s proven training methods have produced elite champion fighters in both sports — including Robert Harris (ISKA Middleweight World Kickboxing Champion) and Dusty Winkles (IKF World Classic Champion).

Because safety, technical mastery, and fundamental discipline come first, boxing and kickboxing training are advanced pathways offered to students who have established a solid karate foundation. Starting with core martial arts ensures every practitioner develops the control, footwork, and conditioning required for full-contact training.

If you’re seeking specialized kickboxing, building your base on our floor is where that journey begins.
